Covid-Era Makeup Trends That Make Living During a Pandemic a Little More Bearable

Existing during a global pandemic has opened us up to a host of new things, some more pleasant than others. Zoom happy hours and constant low-level anxiety—not our favorite new things. Tons more food delivery options—that’s something we can get behind.

Another positive change to come out of this tough time are makeup trend updates that are so refreshing, they make us want to grab an Ocean Spray cranberry juice and hop on a skateboard. Check out the four key makeup trends that have emerged from these seemingly-endless Covid days.

  1. Glossy Lips

  2. Fluffy Brows

  3. Allover Blush

  4. Bright Eyeshadow

Glossy Lips

As a person who loves (LOVES!) a bright lip, it was a tough blow when I realized that wearing lipstick under a mask is a recipe for disaster. Not only does the lipstick stain your mask, it gets all over your face in a way that defies the laws of physics. One lipstick mustache was enough to force me to put my beloved Nars lipstick aside on the days I would need to wear a mask.

As a result of the lipstick vs. mask conundrum, makeup lovers have turned to an alternative that keeps lips looking luscious with far less mess. Lip glosses and balms have made a major comeback during Covid, with brands like Glossier releasing new versions in the past year.

Fluffy Brows

Severe, structured brows just don’t look right anymore. Can we get a collective UGH for all the time we spent defining our brows with concealer in 2014? In the Covid era, brows look best with some body and a sense of ease.

To nail the fluffy brow look, lightly pencil in any thin spots, then use brow gel (not too much!) and brush it upward. The result gives the face a bright, youthful look.

Allover Blush

It’s not just for the apples of your cheeks anymore! Makeup artists and influencers have been going wild with blush lately, using a powder brush to swipe it across the chin, top of the forehead, and even on the nose. The rosy result gives the face a vibrant flush, making it look like you’ve just come inside after a chilly walk.

Bright Eyeshadow

Smize-ing can only get you so far. Let your eyeshadow do some of the talking for you with a punchy swipe of color. Bright tones like periwinkle blue, peach, and yellow have been popping up on influencers and celebrities alike. This trend is fun, optimistic, and simple—no need for a 16-shade palette, 4 brushes, and 30 minutes of your valuable time. For a bolder take, choose your favorite bright shade and cover your entire lid. Finish the look with dark eyeliner and mascara. Go for a blank lid and a pop of bright eyeliner for a more subdued version of the trend.
