Adapting Your Skin Care Routine for Winter

It’s time to rethink how you moisturize!

You may switch out your wardrobe when the seasons change, but do you also switch your skin care routine?

When winter rolls in, temperature and humidity drop, making skin more likely to become dry and chapped. That means getting your moisturizer situation dialed in is more important this time of year. Here are some ways to help your skin make the seasonal transition flawlessly!

  • Oil Up

  • Exfoliate Regularly

  • Layer Moisturizers

  • Stay Hydrated

Don’t Fear the Oils

Back in the ‘90s when I was just learning about skin care, people would have passed out at the thought of putting oil on your face! Oil causes zits and clogs pores, right? Wrong!

Facial oils and oil-based cleansers have become increasingly popular in the past decade and for good reason. They keep skin looking radiant and dewy, and they can fight off the winter dryness that makes skin look dull.

Even if you have combination or oily skin, don’t fear the oils! As a person with combo skin, I was skeptical at first, but now I’m fully devoted to my facial oil. Paradoxically, adding facial oil into my routine made my face less oily and more even in texture.

If you’re worried about pores and breakouts, try Sunday Riley’s U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil. My personal favorite is the plain and simple (and affordable!) single-ingredient rose hip oil—The Ordinary makes a great one! For cleansing oils, a good option is Tatcha’s Camellia Oil 2-in-1 Makeup Remover & Cleanser.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate

If you’re like me, you might let your exfoliation routine slide a bit in the summertime, but as the seasons change, buffing off that dead skin becomes essential. I love making my own scrub with fine sugar, lemon, honey, and coconut oil. Works great on the bod, too! If you don’t feel like cooking up your own exfoliator, try e.l.f.’s Exfoliating Scrub or Glossier’s Exfoliating Skin Perfector.

Love for Layers

On the cooler days, one type of moisturizer just may not cut it, especially at night. It might sound a bit overkill, but I recommend starting with a serum (my absolute forever fave is Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum), then adding a creamy moisturizer (I’ve been trying Cocokind’s Texture Smoothing Cream, and finishing with one of those aforementioned oils!

Hella Hydrated

I know we’ve all heard it one million times, but I’ll say it again: One of the best ways to take care of your skin is to drink lots of water! Staying hydrated is extra important in the wintertime when humidity is low. Your whole body will thank you, not just your face!
